Mardyke / PE Office
The Mardyke Arena is located on Mardyke Walk parallel to Western Rd. It is absolutely essential that all students have their student card with them when entering the arena. This is where a lot of clubs operate from. A man by the name of Patsy Ryan is the General Manager of the Mardyke Arena. His office is on the first floor across the balcony. There are also many Duty Managers in the arena. They can usually be found at reception and any problems with rooms, injuries, equipment should be brought to there attention. The Mardyke Staff should be treated with courtesy and respect.
The Mardyke Gym
If you haven’t been there you’re missing out. This is geared towards people who haven’t gone yet. There is a weights gym beside the sports halls, a cardio gym above it and a women’s gym on the 1st floor across the balcony.
There is a free weight section and a machine section in the weights gym. There are also some areas to stretch. The machines all have pictures and writing telling you exactly what to do. There are also staff members wandering about who can help you. Honestly, they couldn’t have ‘idiot proofed’ them better.
The free weights section is a little tougher. It’s good to have a routine planned out and bring a friend that knows what they’re doing. You have to be a bit more careful here not to pull a muscle or damage your back. Lifting more than you’re able or not knowing what you’re doing can hurt you – use this information wisely.
The cardio gym is full or treadmills, bikes, rowing machines and walkers. This is a great place to burn fat and keep you’re heart pumping. Everything’s pretty easy to use.
The women’s gym is one of the first in the country. It is located on the first floor of the Mardyke and is a great resource to have.
From a fitness point of view everyone should do some form of exercise and it is very easy to mark you’re progress in the gym. Clubs should use the gym for that extra bit of training and to keep fit. All students have freemembership to the gym and if you go don’t forget to bring a towel!
Elite Gym
For those clubs that want to be the best, to beat UCD, to beat Trinity, to beat CIT, to be the elite - this is the place to go. This gym will be available for clubs to book free of charge during the college year. It will also be used exclusively for UCC clubs. Your club can book a training slot through the Mardyke Arena. There are a few simple rules though.
There is a set minimum and maximum amount of people that can book the gym. Somewhere between 8-25 people is recommended. Smaller clubs can join forces and go as one group. You must train specific to your sport. The Mardyke Arena will give a seminar before any group is allowed to use the facility.
Parking
Parking in the Mardyke Arena is available for all members of the Arena. Parking is not available for non-members, for matches or for events in the Arena. A complete set of the parking rules is available form the Mardyke Arena.
The PE Office The PE office is located in the Ferrylodge at the corner of the Mardyke Grounds near the entrance to Fitzgeralds Park. It is open during the college term Mon – Fri 9.15am – 5pm. In the summer months it is also open 9.15am – 1pm and 2.10pm – 5pm Mon – Fri. The People The first people you should see are the Executive Assistant: Helen O Leary Senior Executive Assistant Betty Young. They are just behind the desk when you walk in the door on the left and can help you out with any issues you may have regarding anything sporting in UCC.
